Frequently Asked Questions
WHAT IS A POSTPARTUM DOULA?
Postpartum doulas are trained, non-medical individuals who assist families and birth parents in the “fourth trimester” postpartum period, traditionally known as the first three months after the baby is born. How do we integrate this new tiny family member into our lives? How do we embrace this chapter and become the mom we always wanted to be? Postpartum doulas provide emotional and sometimes physical support to the birth parent, partner, and other family members. We know the transition can take much longer than three months, though, often up to a year postpartum, and so having someone on your team to navigate this new phase of life can be incredibly beneficial. Note that postpartum doulas are not medical professionals and therefore do not diagnose medical conditions. Their role is to recognize what’s outside of their scope and refer you to the proper providers and resources as necessary.
HOW DOES A POSTPARTUM DOULA HELP EXACTLY?
Lauren works specifically as a virtual postpartum doula, assisting with breastfeeding/formula feeding support, emotional recovery, newborn care tips, baby sleep help, and local referrals. She also teaches classes for new moms.
A traditional in-person postpartum doula can assist with all of these things in addition to physical recovery, light housekeeping, errands, newborn care, sibling care, and light meal prep. Lauren does not offer in-person doula work at this time.
Will you pressure me to EITHER breastfeed or formula feed my baby?
Nope. Feeding a baby is HARD WORK, no matter how you do it. The goal is find the best way to feed your baby, in a way that works for you and your family.
DO POSTPARTUM DOULAS ASSIST WITH LABOR AND DELIVERY?
No, birth doulas and postpartum doulas are different. Birth doulas have separate training and focus on the birth, including labor and delivery. Postpartum doulas specialize in everything that happens after the birth.
